It is suspected that he had the help of his mother and cousin. Nine year old Walter Collins was last seen in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. Walters father was in prison for robbery, at the prison Walters father was responsible for reporting other inmates infraction. This led Waters father to think the former inmates had something to do with the disappearance of his son in attempt for revenge.

Police couldnt connected these cases together. Someone made a complaint about their neighbor mistreating a boy at his chicken farm, the cops didnt find this any help to the disappearance of the young boys.
Illinois police picked up a boy that claimed his name was Walter Collins. California police contacted Christine Collins and showed a picture of the young boy who claimed to be her son, she said that was not her son. Captain J.J Jones told her to take the boy for a while and "try it out". Three weeks later Christine Collins brought the boy to the police station with evidence that this was not her son, dental records, and signed statements from people saying that this boy was not Walter Collins. Captain Jones said that she was crazy and wanted the state to take care of her son. She was sent to a psychiatric ward in Los Angeles.
